Local water damage help, from a local shop

Flood Water Damage Cleanup NOW works out of 145 W Main St, East Islip, NY 11730, on the stretch of Main Street (Montauk Highway) that runs through the middle of East Islip. For homes in East Islip, that means the people who answer the phone, scope the job and come back for daily moisture readings are local.

East Islip is a South Shore hamlet of about 13,900 people, with the Great South Bay to the south and Heckscher State Park along its shoreline. Water damage here tends to come from two directions: inside the house (pipes, appliances, water heaters, sewage backups) and outside it (heavy rain, nor'easters and surge on the bayfront streets). The cleanup for each is different, and so is the insurance.

What to do in the first hour

  • Stop the water if you can. Shut the main valve where the line enters the house, usually in the basement, crawl space or garage.
  • Power off to wet areas, only if you can reach the panel without standing in water.
  • Photograph everything before anything gets moved or thrown out. Your adjuster looks at these first.
  • Call us. We'll tell you what to do while the crew gets there.
WHAT WE SEE IN EAST ISLIP

Three ways East Islip homes take on water

Bayfront and south-of-Montauk streets

Homes closer to the Great South Bay sit lower and closer to the water table. A nor'easter or tropical storm can push bay water into yards and crawl spaces, and that water is treated as contaminated.

Record-setting rain

In August 2014 an official gauge at Islip recorded 13.57 inches of rain in 24 hours, still the New York State record. The heaviest rain fell over Islip and East Islip, and storm drains built for about an inch an hour were overwhelmed.

Everyday plumbing failures

Most of the calls we get aren't storms. They're supply lines, water heaters, washing machine hoses and frozen pipes, the kind of loss homeowners policies usually cover when it's sudden.

LOCAL DETAIL

The 2014 flood is the benchmark here

On August 12 and 13, 2014, a stalled storm dropped 13.57 inches of rain at Islip, an official New York State 24-hour record according to the National Weather Service. At its peak, 1.76 inches fell in 15 minutes. Meteorologists described the heavy rain as focused along the South Shore from Babylon through East Islip.

That storm is a useful reminder of what East Islip basements face. A house doesn't have to be near the bay to flood; it just has to be lower than the street, or have a window well, floor drain or garage that funnels runoff inside. After a storm like that, the jobs that go worst are the ones where water sat in a finished basement for several days before anyone dried it.

Sewer or cesspool? It changes the job

Parts of the Town of Islip are on county sewer districts, and many homes still use a cesspool or septic system. Suffolk County as a whole has more than 360,000 homes on cesspools and septic systems. If water came up through a floor drain or lowest toilet, where it came from matters: a full cesspool needs a pumping service, a sewer lateral blockage needs a plumber, and either way the water is Category 3 and porous materials it touched usually come out. See sewage backup cleanup.

Insurance for East Islip homes

A burst pipe or failed appliance is usually covered under a standard homeowners policy. Rising bay water is flood damage, and that needs a separate flood policy. Sewer backup often needs a rider. We document which cause did which damage so your adjuster can match it to the right coverage. See the insurance claims guide.

FAQ

East Islip water damage questions

Where are you located?

Our office is at 145 W Main St, East Islip, NY 11730, on Main Street (Montauk Highway). East Islip is our home base, and we cover all of Nassau and Suffolk County from here.

Do you handle flooding on the streets south of Montauk Highway?

Yes. Outside water from the bay or a storm is treated as contaminated (Category 3), so affected drywall, insulation and carpet usually come out, and the space is cleaned and sanitized before drying. Flood insurance, not homeowners insurance, usually covers that damage.

My basement flooded in a heavy rain. Is that covered?

It depends on how the water got in. Groundwater seepage and surface runoff are often excluded under standard policies; a sump pump or water backup endorsement can change that. Check your declarations page or ask your agent, and photograph everything first.

Can you do the repairs after drying?

Yes. We rebuild from the same file your adjuster already reviewed. See reconstruction and rebuild.
